Founded by Henry Johnson in 1856 as a railroad station under the name “Johnson’s Depot”, Johnson City has since grown into an exciting small city known for outdoor recreation, affordable housing, and downright amazing people. Listed below are seven suggestions for things to do in this wonderful city we call home.

1) Appalachian Ghostwalks — Johnson City is surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains, and these mountains have stories to tell. Explore the mysteries of our mountain roots and learn about the paranormal places you pass every day with Appalachian Ghostwalks. These tours, that cover everything from history to Bigfoot to, of course, ghosts, are great for friends and families alike. Check out their tour offers today and pick your next adventure.

2) Tweetsie Trail — This 19-mile trail is relatively flat and great for walking your dog, running, biking, and even using those cross country ski roller skate things. The Tweetsie Trail gets its name from the sound of a train whistle and is part of the Rails-To-Trails Project. The trail connects Johnson City with Elizabethton and is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a little fresh air.

3) Rocky Mount Museum — Not only does this museum showcase the history of our state, but it also allows visitors to see the 18th century in action. Live actors play roles from this earlier period throughout the grounds adding a tactile level to the educational experience. This is surely one of the most interesting historic tours and experiences in the area.

4) Boone Lake — This lake is part of the Holston River, and maintains a stable amount of water the entire year. A swimming area has been created above the dam. In addition to this, you will also find a boat ramp, which allows easy boat launch and retrieval. Fish in this beautiful lake include spotted bass, blue catfish, white crappie, hybrid striped bass, bluegill, brown trout, and many more.

5) The Firehouse — As the name suggests, the theme of this restaurant is fire fighting, which makes it a unique dining experience every visit. Offering some of the best bar-b-q and baked beans in East Tennessee, this is a great and affordable spot to grab a bite to eat.

6) JRH Brewing — It’s an undisputed fact, local beer tastes better. This family- and pet-friendly brewery offers tours upon request and food trucks daily. Stop by, it’s five o’clock somewhere, afterall.

7) Nolichucky River — If you are looking for an opportunity to catch world class fish and whitewater, look no further than the Nolichucky River. Here you will find a huge variety of bass, as well as rainbow trout that can be caught even in the winter. The Nolichucky River passes through one of the widest and steepest gorges in the eastern part of America, making it a truly breathtaking experience.
