Stock Up An Emergency Kit

Having to drive in extreme snowfall and ice can be hazardous. Hence, having an emergency kit for such weather conditions can come in handy. Make sure to include only reusable items in your kit. Things like blankets, sleeping bags, extra clothing, candles, matches, flares, flashlights, a shovel, sandbags and a first aid kit are a must.

Get Your Car Inspected

Periodic car maintenance is necessary to keep your car in excellent condition. Yet, as the winter approaches, double-checking your car’s components can be a good idea. Begin by checking under the hood. Is the wiper fluid level full? Having a full reservoir will ensure that your windscreen stays clear even on the snowiest days. You can add a deicer to the wiper fluid if you are residing in areas that experience freezing temperatures.

Refer to the owner’s manual to determine the type of oil used for your car. Your oil’s viscosity is influenced by changing temperatures. Oil becomes thinner at higher temperatures and thicker in colder weather. So, more viscous oil is best reserved for warmer climates. Change your car’s oil as per expert advice or as recommended in the manual.

Now that you are looking under the hood take a look at your car’s battery. Is it fully charged and functional? Is the cooling system functioning correctly? Are the hoses in good shape? Make sure to do a thorough check of your car’s components.

Check your Engine’s Coolant

Also called antifreeze, the coolant helps to protect your engine in extreme weather. Having a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water is recommended. An inappropriate ratio of this mixture may cause the water to freeze and expand. This pressure buildup causes the engine to develop cracks and affect cylinder heads and other engine components.

You can test the engine coolant using simple testers found at auto stores. Remove the coolant reservoir cap and insert the hose of the coolant tester. Squeeze and release the rubber bulb, allowing the coolant to be drawn into the coolant tester. Check the temperature rating. If the rating is warmer than the likely coldest temperature in your area, the coolant needs to be changed.

Check Your Car’s Lights

Winters are often foggy with no clear view of the road, and your car’s lights must be in good working condition for you to drive through a blizzard or snow. Check the turn signals and headlights. Test the different brightness levels as well. Check if the emergency lights, fog lights and brake lights are functional. Replace any damaged lights immediately. Properly working lights can avoid accidents since they let other drivers know your location. These lights must also be cleaned and free from snow.
